Sept. 27 — Clinical professor provides opening keynote speech for children’s hospital seminar Jann Murray-García, an associate clinical professor at the Betty Irene Moore School of Nursing at UC Davis, provided the opening keynote speech on cultural humility for the annual Social Determinants of Health in the Children’s Hospital Seminar for the UC Davis Children’s Hospital. This year’s theme was “Embracing Patients and Families in Crisis.” A pediatrician, Jann developed the concept of cultural humility with fellow physician Melanie Tervalon when the two published a journal article citing the need for cultural humility, which goes beyond cultural competency, in order to address and eventually eliminate health disparities. Jann also leads the annual Central Valley Bus Trip to help health professions students better understand the many groups and people who live in the state’s large valley as well as the disparities in health among those groups.
